Sin & Temptation Questions – Ch. 7

TOLBC believes that growth in the Christian faith is a life-long endeavor and that one of the places it can happen best is in Sunday School class. Sunday school is important in the spiritual development of Christians. It is the only place in most churches that gives a systematic, comprehensive, complete coverage of the Word of God. Currently we are studying “Sin and Temptation” by John Owen. We invite you to join us.

Chapter 7: The Nature of Temptation (Pages 95-101)

  1. What makes temptation so tempting? Can I tempt myself to sin?
  2. Is temptation in itself a sin? Is a “lustful thought” a temptation or a sin?
  3. Read these two passages of Scripture: 2 Sam. 24:1-24; 1 Chron. 21:1-8. Who tempted David to sin?
  4. Matt. 4:1 reads, “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil,” why did the Holy Spirit lead Jesus into wilderness to be tempted?
  5. Reconcile these two verses, Matt. 6:13 “and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil,” and James 1:13 “let no one say when he is tempted, I am being tempted by God; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.”
