Sin & Temptation Questions – Ch. 9

TOLBC believes that growth in the Christian faith is a life-long endeavor and that one of the places it can happen best is in Sunday School class. Sunday school is important in the spiritual development of Christians. It is the only place in most churches that gives a systematic, comprehensive, complete coverage of the Word of God. Currently we are studying “Sin and Temptation” by John Owen. We invite you to join us.

Chapter 9: The Power of  Temptation (Pages 103-118)

  1. Where does temptation get its power?
  2. Since the Lord Jesus Christ had no sin nature, how tempting was the Devil’s temptations in Matt. 4;1-11?
  3. You have been invited by GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) to speak on this topic: “Is there any biblical merit for opposing same sex marriage?” Using your knowledge of the power of temptation as your focal point, how would you frame your speech? (I am looking for three well articulated points).
  4. Using Genesis 39: 1-18 as a reference, how would you refute John Owens assertion on page 114 (#4), “the thought of the vileness of sinning against God?”
  5. On page 116 (last paragraph), John Owens asserts, “by such means, temptation penetrates so deep into the heart that no antidote reaches it.” Is the problem of temptation a lack of antidote or the Christian’s unwillingness to resist such temptation? Is there any biblical antidote for the power of temptation? If yes, please list them. If no, state your reason.
